Welcome To My Blog!
Welcome To My Blog!
Hi and welcome to my first blog! I’m planning to use this space to tell stories, give advice for photographers (and ask for advice in return), talk through difficult shoots and what I could have done better, show my editing process, and just generally chat about all things photography! If that sort of thing interests you, please subscribe to this newsletter to get my posts delivered directly to your inbox! I promise there won’t be more than one email a week!
Today I thought I would go through the story of how I first got started with photography. The first time I remember using a professional camera was at my mom’s cousin’s wedding (I think that technically makes him my first cousin once removed) when I was about 15 years old. It was a beautiful wedding at their farm where we were whisked away by tractor to the chapel in the woods. I have such good memories of visiting that farm when I was younger – we dug in the dirt, drove the truck through the fields, picked raspberries, and explored the old duck blinds on the property. I have a particularly funny memory of my brother throwing rocks at a giant boulder and one bounced back and hit him in the face. In hindsight, I probably wasn’t the best sister and just laughed when he got mad at the boulder, but seeing a small child yell at an inanimate object is pretty funny in my opinion.
At this wedding, I was at an awkward age where everyone was either a full grown adult or a small child, so I didn’t have anyone to interact with other than my parents, and there wasn’t much for me to do. So my Uncle David handed me his camera and started to show me how to use all the buttons and dials. I was instantly hooked. I ran around the farm the entire wedding taking photos of the barn, the plants, and all the wildlife. I remember handing the camera back to my uncle, and then a few minutes later I would ask if I could take some more photos “really quick”. I’m sure none of those photos were very good, and I don’t think I’ve ever even seen them off the tiny camera screen, but I knew that I had discovered something I loved.
This is a very short blog today, but I’ll have to go through my high school experiences another time when I find all my old negatives. (I asked my date to a high school dance using film photography!). Coming up soon I’m going to talk about when to choose black and white versus color when editing photos, and I have an anecdote of a missed photo opportunity at a giant charcuterie table.
Thanks again for subscribing, it really means a lot to me and I hope you’re enjoying it so far! If you’re ready to get some photos taken, you can visit my website (www.kimholdenphoto.com) to book a session, view my gallery, or check out pricing.
Let’s create some memories.
